Weaverville sits ten miles north of Asheville where the Reems Creek valley opens up, and the town has two kinds of homes: the older streets around Main Street and Lake Louise, and the newer houses on the ridges along Ox Creek Road, Monticello Road and Hamburg Mountain. The valley holds fog on cool mornings, and the glass in town and along Reems Creek Road starts most days wet. On the ridges the problem is exposure. Those view windows face west toward the Great Craggy Mountains and take the full afternoon sun, which at this elevation bakes pollen and water spots into a haze that a casual rinse will not touch.
The Reems Creek Golf Club and the homes around it back onto fairways that are irrigated, and the overspray leaves a line of mineral spots along the lower panes by midsummer. Spring brings the pollen, with the white pines and oaks letting go in April, and the valley catches it a few days before the ridges.
