What Black Mountain does to a window
Black Mountain is the last town before the Blue Ridge climbs to the Eastern Continental Divide, and at around 2,400 feet it gets more fog, more rain and a sharper sun than the valley floor. Mornings here often start inside a cloud, and the mist settles on every window from the Cheshire Village porches to the cottages on Lake Tomahawk before it burns off. Up the Flat Creek valley in Montreat the hemlocks and oaks close over the road, and homes along Assembly Drive and the Montreat ridges live in shade most of the day. That shade keeps the glass damp, and a green film builds on the north side of a house by the end of a wet summer.
Fall is the heavy season here. The maples, oaks and poplars that bring the leaf-peepers up Highway 70 and Highway 9 drop everything in about four weeks, and the gutters in Montreat, Ridgecrest and the older streets off Montreat Road fill faster than almost anywhere we work. The leaves pile against the lower sash and leave tannin stains where they sit wet on the glass. Then the wood stoves start, and a fine film of smoke settles on the outside of the windows through March. In spring the pollen comes a week or two later than Asheville but just as thick, and Swannanoa, down in the valley along the river and Bee Tree Road, catches it first.
A quarterly plan suits most Black Mountain homes, with the inside glass done once a year, and we recommend timing one visit for right after the leaves are down. Homes in Montreat and on the steeper Blue Ridge Assembly side often have tall gable glass over a hillside, and we clean it with water-fed poles and ladders set for the slope. Can you clean the glass on a hillside home in Montreat?
Yes. Montreat and the Assembly side are steep, and most of the homes have a tall wall of glass on the downhill side. We clean it with water-fed poles from the ground wherever possible and set ladders only where the slope allows a safe footing.
